Frequently Asked Questions
Get rid of your old items for free with the Byewaste pick-up service:
- Sort the items that you want to get rid of. Put each category in a separate bag or box. Please make sure that the package is as small as possible and close it carefully.
- Label the boxes or bags with our printable stickers or pen and paper*.
- Schedule your pick-up in the Byewaste app.
On the day of the pick-up:
- Capelle: Place the items outside in front of your building or in the common area on the ground floor before the chosen time slot.
- Rotterdam: The collector will ring your doorbell to pick up the items. You can also leave them in your garden or a common area on the ground floor. It is not allowed to put the items outside on the sidewalk.
Please note that our collectors are not allowed to carry heavy items off the stairs due to safety reasons.
*When using pen and paper, write down “Byewaste” and the name of the category. You only have to use one sticker per category, even when there are multiple boxes or bags of the same category.
We only pick up reusable books, electronics, toys, textile and other small items that you would usually bring to the secondhand store.
The maximum size per box is 35 x 55 x 55 cm. We do not pick up items that do not adhere to these measurements.
We do not pick up small chemical waste, such as batteries and light bulbs, paint cans, medicines and needles, contaminated items, industrial waste, residual waste and bulky waste.
You can leave the box(es) or bag(s) outside in front of the building that you live in. In the case of a flat, this could be on the sidewalk.
Our drivers should not have to ring a doorbell to pick up your items. This way, you do not have to stay at home for the pick-up.
Please make sure that your items are ready for pick-up before the chosen timeslot. Our collector will ring your doorbell to pick up the items.
You can print new stickers here.
To have your items picked up without stickers, please write “Byewaste” and the category (textile, electronics or mix) on a piece of paper and attach it to the boxes and/or bags.
Residents of Capelle aan den IJssel can also pick up new stickers at one of the following locations:
- Dresscode – Puccinipassage 5, 2901 GK
- RTV van der Meulen – Bermweg 31-33, 2906 LB
- Brownies & DownieS – Stadsplein 39, 2903 HH
- Het Goed – Kanaalweg 39, 2903 LR
Your books, toys, electronics, textiles and small household items will, if they are still in good condition, be reused through our network of sustainable partners – such as thrift store Het Goed and Boekenbalie.
When it turns out that some of the items are no longer reusable, they will be recycled at the local recycling centre. These products will then be reused as raw materials.
This is how we protect the environment.
Our drivers will pick up your items at the chosen time slot even when it rains. You can help us by putting them in a water-resistant box or bag.
For our collection, we work together with the employees of Het Goed. Due to their company-wide safety measures, they are not allowed to carry heavy items off the stairs.
Please make sure there is somebody there to help with carrying the items at the time of the collection, or bring them downstairs before the chosen timeslot if possible.
You can make use of our service an unlimited number of times. However, for environmental reasons, it is advisable to collect as many items as possible at the same time and have them picked up simultaneously. This way, we reduce our ecological footprint by limiting the number of trips.

Our service is currently available in:
- Capelle aan den IJssel Service is available in the whole municipality
- Rotterdam in the IJsselmonde, Feijenoord, Charlois, Kralingen-Crooswijk, Rotterdam Centre, Delfshaven and Rotterdam North areas.
We will expand to the whole municipality of Rotterdam within a few months, and are looking forward to adding new locations to the list.
We cancel mattress pick-ups one day in advance if heavy rain is expected. When the mattresses are too wet, they can no longer be recycled. In this case, valuable materials are lost, which has a negative impact on the environment.
If it only rains a little bit, please keep your mattress inside. In this case, our collector will ring your doorbell. This way we keep the mattress as dry as possible.
When you make a new appointment, we will gladly pick up your old mattress at a better time!
In collaboration with OurkilO, we have started a pilot in Rotterdam North to pick up PET-1 Plastic. This way, we give residents the opportunity to do something good for their neighbourhood and contribute to a more sustainable society.
Our partner OurkilO will make new products for local use from the collected plastic, such as sandpit shovels for the children in the neighbourhood. To help the company choose a design, residents and local organisations can submit their own ideas.
If the option is available in your neighbourhood, it will automatically appear in the app. More information about the pilot can be found on this page.
